NEWARK, N.J. -- Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic was the first to report that the New Jersey Devils have agreed to an eight-year extension with Timo Meier.

New Jersey acquired Meier on Feb. 26 from the San Jose Sharks in a multi-player trade that included Fabian Zetterlund, Nikita Okhotiuk, and Shakir Mukhamadullin. He appeared in 21 games for New Jersey, earning 14 points (nine goals, five assists). In the postseason, he scored two goals and collected four points in 11 games.

On June 16, Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald met with reporters and provided an update on where things stood with Meier and his agent, Claude Lemieux.

"He knows how much we want to continue this relationship, long term, and he's reiterated that to me ... this is where he wants to be," said Fitzgerald. "He sees himself as a Devil and has asked his agent to negotiate an eight-year deal with us. It's music to my ears, and we'll continue to kind of chip away at it, but the goal is to have Timo Meier in a Devils' uniform for the next eight years."

During his end-of-season media availability, Meier was non-commital when speaking about an extension but spoke highly of his teammates in New Jersey.

"A very talented group," he said. "The way the team stuck together when we were down against the (New York) Rangers in the series, the battle back, and the tightness of this group. Everybody, including the staff and medicals, works together. It's a fun environment."
