NEWARK, N.J. -- Broadcaster and analyst Kevin Weekes reports that the New Jersey Devils are trading goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to the San Jose Sharks for a sixth-round draft pick.

Blackwood, 26, was drafted 42nd overall by New Jersey at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Having spent his entire career as a Devil, he has appeared in 152 career NHL games earning a save percentage of .906 and goals against average of 2.97.

Last season, he was sidelined with injuries starting only 20 games. With the emergence of Akira Schmid and Vitek Vanecek inked to a three-year deal, the writing was on the wall for Blackwood, who has dealt with injuries the past couple of seasons.

During his end-of-season media availability, Blackwood was asked if he was open to a return to New Jersey and said it's all about having an opportunity.

"Obviously, I've been here for my entire NHL career so far," he said. "I love the team, I love all the guys, so it would be hard to leave that, but at the end of the day, you want to go where the opportunity is. It depends on a couple of things, but obviously, if there's an opportunity (in New Jersey), then absolutely."
