Nelson recorded his 500th career point in the second period against Vegas.
ELMONT, NY -- With Brock Nelson’s delayed penalty strike, the New York Islanders forward tallied the 500th point of his NHL career on Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
He becomes the 12th New York Islander to accomplish the feat and first since Josh Bailey.
Early in the second period, the Islanders got a delayed penalty, leading to a prolonged cycle on the six-on-five. Noah Dobson from the high slot dished a pass to Alexander Romanov at the left point, opening up a passing lane to Nelson. Romanov made no mistake on the cross to Nelson, who buried a shot glove side past Adin Hill, tying the game up for the Islanders:
Nelson boasts 262 goals and 238 assists in his NHL career, all with the Islanders. The forward was selected with the 30th pick in the first round of 2010’s NHL Draft. Nelson also sits eighth on the Islanders’ all-time goal list, beating out the likes of Bob Bourne, Bobby Nystrom and John Tonelli: all members of the Islanders’ Hall of Fame. Nelson needs 42 points to tie Bob Bourne for 10th all-time on the Islanders’ point list.
500 career points is also a milestone no Islanders’ players will likely reach for a while. Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal are the two closest to the feat, but both have 435 and 410 points, respectively. Should Barzal continue his All Star level play, he should reach 500 next season, but whether the Islanders’ captain makes it is to be determined.
