ELMONT, NY -- The New York Islanders got out to a 3-0 in the first period en route to a 7-4 win over the Nashville Predators at UBS Arena.
While Brock Nelson scored twice, with Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Kyle Palmieri, Bo Horvat and Casey Cizikas added goals, it was Ilya Sorokin who joined an elusive group in the win.
With the Islanders leading 6-4 and Nashville’s net vacant for an extra attacker, Sorokin stopped a Tommy Novak shot with his blocker, which sent a rebound to Steven Stamkos.
Stamkos’ pass to the blue line then evaded Brady Skjei, sending the puck into Nashville’s open net:
Sorokin’s goal at 19:48 of the third period secured the Islanders’ 7-4 victory over the Predators.
After the game, Sorokin couldn’t help but make a joke about his longtime friend and rival, New York Rangers’ netminder, Igor Shesterkin:
"If I shot this goal, I think it would have been a different emotion,” Sorokin said. “It’s just luck. It was a good save before. I remember that I touch puck, but I’m not sure if I was last one.”
Brock Nelson loved every minute of it.
"That was unbelievable," Nelson said. "That's a big save [on Marchessault]. We had a bench view of it and it was a great shot by Marchessault and he gets a big save on it. It's nice for him to credit on that one. I know they put it in but it's still fun to see him do that."
Patrick Roy, Sorokin's coach and also one of the best to ever play the position, was happy for his netminder.
"It was part of my bucket list, to score a goal in my career," Roy said. I'm sure he's pretty happy about it. Doesn't matter how it goes in."

One to remember for Ilya!
Without a goal in his career, Shesterkin has been one of the most aggressive goaltenders in the league in trying to shoot the puck into opposing empty nets.
The Islanders will look to extend their winning streak to three games on Monday night when they visit Shesterkin and the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
