The New York Islanders blew four leads, one being a multi-goal lead, before falling 7-6 in overtime to the Nashville Predators.
They are now eight points behind the Montreal Canadiens, who have won six straight.
Here's how this game unfolded:
Simon Holmstrom gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 4:16 of the first after he tapped home a strong feed from Ryan Pulock for his 19th of the season:
At 6:44 of the first, Ryan O'Reilly scored his 300th career goal, burying a rebound with the Islanders just too late to pick him up:
After Kyle MacLean won a puck battle in the left corner of the Islanders' zone, he tried to feed Marc Gatcomb, but ended up backhanding one right to the stick of Filip Forsberg. He peeled around the left circle before roofing one high blocker side to give the Predators a 2-1 lead at 11:45 of the first:
Anders Lee scored his 28th goal of the season at 16:12 of the first after Adam Pelech's shot off the face-off deflected off him and in:
The Islanders were outshot 12-8.
Despite a weak start to the second, Holmstrom gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead at 4:36 of the second, his second of the game, after a nice play and feed from Jean-Gabriel Pageau:
Holmstrom has 20 goals for the first time in his NHL career.
Just a few seconds after the Islanders' first power play of the night came to an end, Pageau fed Holmstrom, who fed Maxim Tsyplakov at the top of the crease to give the Islanders a 4-3 lead for his ninth of the season:
Tsyplakov snapped a 10-game goal drought with that tally.
However, the Islanders allowed the 4-4 tying goal just 1:06 later after Michael McCarron buried a rebound at 13:25 of the second:
After turning aside 19 of 23 shots, Sorokin's night was done. McCarron fell onto him after his goal, and it looked like Sorokin may have tweaked something.
Marcus Hogberg came in for his 12th appearance of the season.
Kyle Palmieri gave the Islanders a 5-4 lead at 15:21 of the third after he roofed a backhander from the slot, over Annunen's blocker:
Just 58 seconds later, Scott Mayfield scored shorthanded from the slot after Holmstrom found him trailing off the rush at 16:19 of the third:
Stamkos scored his second power-play goal of the night at 17:53 of the third to make it a 6-5 game:
The Islanders failed to hold on, allowing the tying goal with 39.8 seconds to play in the third via a Michael Bunting deflection:
In overtime, it was Fedor Svechkov who potted the game-winner to give Nashville a 7-6 victory:
