Islanders Earn Patrick Roy His First Win, 3-2 In OT Over Dallas

Islanders Beat Stars 3-2 in Overtime

ELMONT, NY - After trailing entering the third period, the New York Islanders earned a come-from-behind, 3-2 overtime win over the Dallas Stars, giving Patrick Roy the victory in his debut as Islanders’ head coach.

The Islanders got the lone goal of Roy’s first period as bench boss. Noah Dobson handed the puck up to Alex Romanov, who started a rush with Mathew Barzal. After going back and forth, Romanov ripped the puck past Scott Wedgewood to give New York the lead.

Dobson’s secondary assist gave him his 40th helper of the season, he is the first Islanders’ defenseman to reach the milestone since Mark Streit in 2011-12.

Goaltending was spotless the rest of the opening frame. Ilya Sorokin stopped all 16 shots, including five on two Dallas power plays, while Wedgewood stopped 12 shots and made several big saves.

While the Islanders had their jump in the first, Dallas responded with a strong second period. With 8:30 to play in the second period, Joe Pavelski connected from the left point to a driving Jason Robertson, who put the puck on a string. After corralling the puck, he beat Sorokin blocker side to tie the game.

3:33 later, Dallas took the lead. Pavelski sent the puck up the right side to Sam Steel, who dropped back to Nils Lundkvist at the right point. The Dallas defenseman squeaked a shot from up high past Sorokin to give the Stars a 2-1 lead after two.

Dallas outshot New York 14-5 in the frame, and Pavelski and Robertson continued their impressive back-to-back showings; both earned three points between the two contests.

With Dallas clinging onto the lead in the third, Hudson Fasching tied the game up in the early stages. Kyle Palmieri won a battle in the corner, giving the puck to Brock Nelson. Nelson sent the puck back to Noah Dobson, who found Fasching’s stick through a screen. Fasching’s third of the year made it 2-2 5:23 into the frame.

Dallas outshot the Islanders 13-9 in the third period, but neither team broke the stalemate over the final 14:37, setting the stage for overtime.

The extra session lasted only 40 seconds, as Barzal sprung Bo Horvat alone on a breakaway off the left wing boards. The Islanders’ center cut towards the middle and buried a backhand shot over the glove of Wedgewood, giving New York the victory.

Horvat’s game-winner extended his point streak to three games, totaling two goals and an assist in that span.
