Bo Horvat scored the overtime winner at the 1:09 mark of the third period.

Newark, N.J. -- The New York Islanders recovered from yet another blown third-period lead on Friday night, with Bo Horvat scoring the overtime winner to give his team a 4-3 overtime win against the New Jersey Devils.

After feeding Barzal inside the left circle, Horvat circled behind the net, before opening up and burying a one-timer for the win at the 1:09 mark of overtime:

Ilya Sorokin continued his masterful start to his 2024-25 campaign, making 32 saves on 35 shots.

Here's how we got to overtime.

After struggling to provide Sorokin offensive support in his last two starts, the Islanders broke the ice early in the affair.

After winning a battle in the left-wing corner, Kyle Palmieri chipped the puck back to Adam Pelech at the point. The defenseman let a shot fly that Brock Nelson tipped past Jake Allen to make it 1-0 Islanders less than 90 seconds in:

New York continued to press in the opening frame, but the Devils weathered the storm to tie the game. After a failed Scott Mayfield clearing attempt and Brenden Dillon shot was deflected, Jesper Bratt made a quick pass to Nico Hischier, who sniped the puck past Sorokin's glove to tie it at 1-1 at 11:36:

Hischier's goal was his eighth of the season in just his 11th game and his third in the last two games.

However, the Islanders pressed after the Devils' goal and drew a power play opportunity. Noah Dobson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau played catch, with the puck ending up on the former's stick at the point.

Dobson let a shot go that was stopped by Allen, but Anders Lee followed up on the rebound. The Islanders captain's third of the year made it 2-1 at 14:03 of the opening frame, a score that held through the opening 20.

The Islanders outshot the Devils 13-8 in the period and won the turnover battle. New York only gave the puck away once to New Jersey's three, with the Islanders also having four takeaways to the Devils' two.

The second period was physical to start, with Kurtis MacDermid and Scott Mayfield tussling after a big hit on Alexander Romanov.

After an ensuing Devils power play was killed, New Jersey leveled the score again.

Jonas Siegenthaler sent Paul Cotter towards the trapezoid, where they caught Sorokin off guard on a pass from below the line. He found Curtis Lazar in front, who snuck a shot through to tie it at two at 5:30 of the period:

Despite New Jersey's tying goal, the Islanders once again had the answer. New York started on a rush the other way, with Nelson getting a cross-ice pass from Palmieri to set up shop. Nelson dropped back to Romanov at the left point, who let a shot fly that found Palmieri's stick and got behind Allen, giving New York a 3-2 lead 11:28 into the second.

Palmieri's goal was his seventh in his career against the Devils, with six of those coming as a member of the Islanders. With two points on Friday, he now has six goals and eight assists for 14 points in 12 games against New Jersey since being traded to New York in 2021.

The score held at 3-2 after 40 minutes, with the Devils outshooting the Islanders 15-13 in the frame. Both teams came up empty on their power play opportunities in the period, but Ryan Pulock took a penalty that carried into the third.

The Islanders killed off the penalty, remaining up 3-2.

Before the halfway mark of the third, MacLean drew a penalty that saw Horvat and Barzal reunite on the power play.

But the Islanders failed to add to their lead, and that came back to bite them.

With the Devils net empty, the Islanders failed to get the puck out, with Jesper Bratt hopping on a loose puck at 18:31 of the third to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime:
