RECAP:
We had a goaltending duel to start this one as both Semyon Varlamov and Eric Comrie were shining in their first starts of the season.
Although the Islanders had no issues against a fast and struggling Sabres team early, mistakes allowed the Sabres to garner momentum, get the first goal, and not look back.
The Sabres took a 1-0 lead at 16:36 of the second period as Jeff Skinner finished off a Casey Mittelstadt pass for his second of the season.
The Islanders' fourth line had a chance to clear the zone, but Matt Martin couldn't corral the loose puck along the half wall as Buffalo.
Less than three minutes later, Adam Pelech went to lay a massive hit on Skinner as he crossed the Islanders blue line but missed the hit. A few seconds later, Mittelstadt found Mattias Samuelsson in the high slot.
With all the time in the world, he skated into the slot and rifled one over the right pad of Varlamov for his first of the season. Skinner earned the secondary assist.
The Sabres extended their lead to 3-0 at 2:40 of the third period after a Samuel Bolduc turnover as he tried to force a pass to Pierre Engvall in the neutral zone.
Buffalo, on a 3-on-1, came down the other way as Dylan Cozens was the recipient of a backdoor pass for a tap-in goal. Rasmus Dahlin and Jordan Greenway recorded the assists on Cozen's second of the season.
Dobson extended his point streak to three games as his shot deflected off Connor Clifton and in at 18:39 of the third.
The Islanders were shut out for the first time this season, as Comrie stopped 23 shots that came his way.
Varlamov stopped 41 in his first start since March 30th.
