    RALEIGH -- The New York Islanders couldn't keep their season alive, falling 6-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 to drop the series four games to one.

    Here's how it happened:

    Teuvo Teravainen got the Hurricanes on the board early after he beat Varlamov from a sharp-angle shot over the glove at 1:23 of the first period:

    Seth Jarvis and Jaccob Slavin recorded the assists.

    After Hudson Fasching took a cross-checking penalty at 1:56 of the first, the Hurricanes doubled their lead at 3:13 of the first when Andreo Svecnhikov's pass to Sebastian Aho at the back post was poked past Varlamov by his own defenseman, Robert Bortuzzo:

    Jarvis and Brent Burns earned the assists.

    With the game starting to feel like a blowout was on the horizon, the Islanders got a power play after a Jesper Kotkaniemi slash and took advantage.

    The top unit needed just 11 seconds before Mike Reilly one-timed a Mathew Barzal feed past the blocker of Frederik Andersen at 3:54 of the first to make it a 2-1 game:

    Brock Nelson earned the secondary helper.

    The Islanders got another power play but couldn't make it count while the Hurricanes came through on a penalty shot, courtesy of a slow-motion Evgeny Kuznetsov, who beat Varlamov at 13:22 of the first after Alexander Romanov covered the puck in the crease.

    The Islanders ended the frame being outshot 20-4, with just five total shots over their last two periods at PNC Arena.

    Brock Nelson got the Islanders within one, making it 3-2 after he beat Andersen five-hole off the rush at 3:47 of the second.

    After Ryan Pulock skated up the ice, he fed Kyle Palmieri over the Hurricanes' blue line, who found Nelson creeping into the high slot:

    The Islanders got gift-wrapped the tying goal at 19:38 of the second as Andersen fell down moving to his right, giving Casey Cizikas a wide-open net off a feed from Barzal;

    Pulock earned the secondary assist.

    After a strong start to the third, disaster struck:

    For the second time in the series, the Islanders allowed two goals in under 10 seconds, going down 5-3 at 4:44 of the third after allowing two goals in eight seconds.

    First, Brady Skjei's pass was deflected before it hopped over Jean-Gabriel Pageau's stick and right to Jack Drury, who beat Varlamov short-side at 4:36 of the third:

    Then, eight seconds later, Skjei dumped the puck in, and when Varlamov went to get it, the puck took an awful bounce off the boards, giving Stefan Noesen a wide-open cage to make it 5-3 with 4:44 to play in the third:

    The Hurricanes sealed the deal as Seth Jarvis scored an empty net goal with 1:39 remaining, increasing the lead to 6-3.
