ELMONT, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders failed to snap their losing streak, falling 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes at UBS Arena on Tuesday night for a fifth straight defeat.

Pierre Engvall was a surprise scratch tonight, as Hudson Fasching took his place in the Islanders lineup after Engvall took part in warmups.

The Islanders had a handful of chances early in the first period but were unable to capitalize. After a failed power play chance for New York, the Hurricanes lit the lamp first.

Brady Sjkei fired a point shot, and Seth Jarvis sent a puck through the legs of Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin at 7:12 of the first.

Jarvis wasn’t done, as he scored his second of the game just 2:13 later to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead at the 15:01 of the first. He finished off a give-and-go with Jake Guentzel at the top of the crease:

The first period ended in the worst possible fashion for the Islanders, as they gave up another goal, this time on the power play, with under two seconds left on the clock after Martin Necas sniped Sorokin blocker side:

There were no goals in the second period, and the Hurricanes retained their 3-0 lead. The Islanders had two more shots than the Hurricanes, with 13 compared to 11.

Kyle Palmieri got the Islanders on the board by burying a rebound. Brock Nelson and Bo Horvat assisted 4:30 into the third period.

Horvats earned his 30th assist of the season on the goal that made the score 3-1.

The Islanders pulled Sorokin early, and gave up an empty net goal to Guentzel from the center line into the empty cage to ice the game at 4-1.
