After the New York Islanders fell to the Boston Bruins 5-4 in a shootout on Friday night, they suffered a second straight loss, falling 5-3 to the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal, who hadn't played since Wednesday, were the better team in the first period, outshooting the Islanders 15-10, with six high-danger chances to New York's one.

Despite surviving the first period, the Canadiens struck first at 7:45 of the second period, after Joe Armia's semi-toe-drag from the slot beat Semyon Varlamov high glove side.

The Canadiens doubled their lead to 2-0 at 10:35 of the second after Josh Anderson's slot shot beat Varlamov through a screen.

In a span of 15 seconds, the Habs doubled their lead to 4-0.

With 53.3 seconds to play in the second, Anderson crashed the net and buried his second of the game before Cole Caufield rifled one from the low slot with 37.9 seconds to play in the middle frame.

Brock Nelson got the Islanders on the board while shorthanded, as he beat Sam Montembeault through the wickets with 17:53 to play in the third after Noah Dobson hit him in stride coming over the Canadiens' blue line.

Dobson and Nelson connected 1:36 later as the young defenseman found his veteran forward coming around the Canadiens net for his second of the game to cut the Habs lead to 4-2 with 16:17 to play in the third.

Bo Horvat got the Islanders within one as he buried a rebound at 14:06 of the third period to cut the Canadiens lead to 4-3.

For the first time in his career, Horvat has a 10-game point streak with seven goals and nine assists.

Christian Dvorak scores with the empty net at 19:40 of the third to give the Canadiens a 5-3 lead.

With the regulation loss, the Islanders snapped their eight-game point streak and have now lost two straight games for the first time since losing to the Flyers 1-0 in a shootout on Nov. 25 before a 5-4 regulation loss to the New Jersey Devils on Nov. 28.
