WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After defeating Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night at UBS Arena, the New York Islanders fell 3-2 to the Washington Capital in overtime.
Like against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, the New York Islanders came out flat against the Washington Capitals on their second leg of a back-to-back on Wednesday night.
After Semyon Varlamov kept the game scoreless early, a defensive zone turnover by Brock Nelson allowed Aliaksei Protas to tee up Hendrix LaPierre in the slot for a one-time finish blocker side to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 9:56 of the first.
The Islanders were outshot 14-7 in the opening frame.
Hudson Fasching tied the score just 1:03 into the second frame as his wraparound squeaks through the legs of Darcy Kuemper for his second of the season.
Cal Clutterbuck left the game with 14:49 to play in the second but returned before the end of the middle frame.
Following a failed redirection into the Capitals' zone by Oliver Wahlstrom, the Capitals eventually established themselves in the Islanders zone before Anthony Mantha fed Joel Edmundson at the point.
His one-timer beat Varlamov through a screen at 13:12 of the second, giving the Capitals a 2-1 lead for his first goal as a member of Washington.
The Islanders were out-shot 9-6 in the middle frame.
Anders Lee tied the score at 2-2 at 12:02 of the third after he deked out Kuemper before finishing on the backhand.
The Islanders outshot the Capitals 16-8 in the third.
In overtime, Noah Dobson took a tripping penalty, and Dylan Strome scored from the high slot to give the Capitals the 3-2 win.
