WASHINGTON, DC -- In Scott Mayfield's return to the lineup, the New York Islanders shut out the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Thursday night at Capital One Arena.
RAPID RECAP:
The Islanders got off to a rather strong start, scoring on their first shot of the game, courtesy of a Ryan Pulock wrist shot from the point just 22 seconds in.
Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri recorded the assists on Pulock's first of the season.
Simon Holmstrom doubled the Islanders' lead to 2-0 at 10:41 of the first, as after two dekes to create time and space, finished off a 2-on-0 chance with Hudson Fasching for his second of the season.
Pageau earned the secondary assist.
Adam Pelech left the ice with 11:26 to play in the first and did not return, holding his hip as he headed down the tunnel.
The Islanders had just two shots on goal in the opening frame, scoring on both.
The shot luck continued in the second, as Nelson beat Kuemper on the Islanders' fifth shot of the game, scoring five-hole off the rush for his fifth of the season.
Kuemper cheated ever so slightly, thinking to pass, and Nelson read it like a children's book.
The Islanders only had 10 shots through two periods, but the story was the Capitals' 42 missed attempts.
The Capitals thought they scored with 11 minutes to play in the third, but the Islanders challenged for goaltender interference and won.
Lane Lambert's squad closed the door in the third as Varlamov recorded his second consecutive shutout, stopping all 26 shots that came his way.
