Islanders Fall 4-2 to Jets

After a weak performance against the Minnesota Wild on Monday night, the New York Islanders couldn't mount a comeback against the Winnipeg Jets falling 3-1 as their losing streak has reached three games.

They have started January with a 2-5-1 record.

Here's how it happened.

The Jets scored the opening goal of the affair at 9:41 of the first period after a Josh Morrissey shot deflected off Adam Lowry in front before caroming off Gabriel Vilardi and in.

Anders Lee tied the game at 1-1 at 15:53 of the first after he deflected a Mike Reilly shot just as the Islanders' first power play just expired for his 12th of the season.

After the Islanders took their third penalty of the game, Neal Pionk gave the Jets a 2-1 lead on the power play. Sorokin made a great save down low but lost his skate blade in the process, leading to a wide-open cage for Pionk at 15:19 of the second.

Less than three minutes later, the Jets doubled their lead to 3-1 after the Islanders turned the puck over in their zone. Sebastian Aho sent the puck up the boards to Adam Pelech, who turned it over before Mason Appleton banked one off Sorokin's pad and in at 17:58 of the second.

Lee scored his second of the game just 35 seconds into the third to cut the Jets' lead to 3-2 as he banked one off Hellebuyck's pad and in for his 13th of the season:

While the Islanders put the pressure on, they couldn't stay out of the box as Noah Dobson took New York's fifth penalty of the game with 4:20 to play in the third.

Kyle Connor, in his first game back, scored on the empty net with 1:22 to play in the third to make it a 4-2 lead.
