Only 5:03 into the extra session, Carolina forward, Jesper Fast scored to give the Canes the 4-3 win and a 2-0 series lead, heading back to UBS Arena Friday

RALEIGH, NC --  The New York Islanders allowed the Carolina Hurricanes to get to their game first on Wednesday night. The same issues arose for New York, as defensive zone turnovers gave Carolina extra chances. After Islanders' defenseman Samuel Bolduc put a little too much on a board pass to Ryan Pulock, the Hurricanes made him pay.

On the extended offensive zone shift, forward Seth Jarvis found defenseman Jaccob Slavin winding up for a one-timer in the left corner. Veteran Paul Stastny got a piece of the shot, which beat Islanders' netminder Ilya Sorokin 5:49 into the first.

The Islanders got a tremendous chance shortly after, but their inability to get to loose pucks before the Hurricanes allowed that chance to go by the boards.

With 9:08 to play in the first, Casey Cizikas got his stick up on Canes Sebastian Aho, sending a few chiclets flying, which earned him a double-minor.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau helped out on the penalty kill as he drew a tripping penalty as we played four aside. That left the Hurricanes with 33 seconds of power-play time after Teuvo Teravainen came out of the box.

In the final 10 seconds of the frame, madness ensued as after Matt Martin interfered with Jordan Staal deep in the Islanders zone, there was dog pile in the crease.

Canes' Jordan Martinook pelican-dove into the pile-up, but the officials decided just to call Martin for interference.

The Islanders continued to make trips to the box as Samuel Bolduc took a high-sticking double-minor a tad over four minutes into the second.

Just as the Islanders were about to kill it off, Islanders Sebastian Aho wacked up a puck out of the air from the right boards, but Sorokin failed to track it as it bounced past him at 7:19 of the second.

The goal was credited to Stefan Noesen, his second of the postseason.

Kyle Palmieri got the Islanders on the board at 10:48 of the second as a soft backhander snuck under Raanta's right pad. Noah Dobson and Brock Nelson were credited with the assists.

Mathew Barzal tied the game for his first goal since Feb. 17, as after Adam Pelech picked off a neutral zone pass, he dished it to Barzal.

When a lane presented itself, Barzal ripped one under the glove of Raanta with 20 seconds to play in the middle frame.

The Islanders got that all-important next goal as Brock Nelson sniped Raanta glove side off the rush at 9:18 of the third, assisted by Kyle Palmieri.

After a strong push from the Hurricanes, Jaccob Slavin banked one off the back of Sorokin's helmet and in at 12:19 of the third. Sorokin thought a pass was coming as he left his post, allowing Slavin more space to shoot.

Ryan Pulock put the Islanders down a man with 5:34 to play in the third, but his teammates got the job done.

This one needed overtime. And only 5:03 into the extra session, Carolina forward, Jesper Fast scored to give the Canes the 4-3 win and a 2-0 series lead, heading back to UBS Arena Friday.

The game didn't end without controversy, as Scott Mayfield was high-sticked only seconds before the winning goal -- yet was missed by the officials. The Islanders ended the night with no power plays while the Hurricanes were scored once while playing with the extra man five times.
