After the New York Islanders lost to the Washington Capitals Monday night, all they could do was hope for some Pittsburgh Penguin failure.

And failed they did as they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2. 

The Blackhawks scored two goals in 26 seconds in the third period to take a 2-1 lead before adding another two later in the frame.

The Penguins did score with the extra attacker with 37.4 seconds to go, but then the Blackhawks scored less than 15 seconds later to reclaim their two-goal lead, and that was that. 

What that result means now is if the Islanders get just one point against the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday night, their regular season finale, they would find themselves participating in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
