Get To Know Islanders Newcomer Calum Ritchie After Trade With Avalanhce
The New York Islanders have traded Brock Nelson to the Colorado Avalanche, and the return was a valuable haul, headlined by top prospect, Calum Ritchie:
Ritchie played in seven NHL games with the Avalanche after making the team out of training camp, scoring one goal which came against the Islanders and goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
The Avalanche did not let him reach 10 games as that would have meant burning a year off his entry-level contract. So, they sent him back to juniors, which means he would not be eligible to be recalled until his season is completed.
In his fourth and final season with the Oshawa Generals, the Oakville, Ontario native has 68 points (15 goals, 53 assists) in 43 games.
Here's the Islanders' plans with their newest prized possession.
"We'll certainly bring him in and we'll have him practice [after his season ends]," Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "Hopefully, he goes through the whole Memorial Cup run and he's playing as long as he can, but we will not burn the year on him. He will not play this season, and won't be able to play in the American League, as well."
Despite not being able to have Ritchie in the lineup right now, Lamoriello is ecstatic to have him.
"He's a top prospect, and I feel very fortunate for the organization that we were able to get a quality player who plays that position, and is able to basically come right into the lineup (next season).
He will take part in development camp, then training camp.
