Alex Ovechkin vs. Ilya Sorokin With Hockey History On Everyone's Mind

On Sunday afternoon, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is looking to break Wayne Gretzky's record for the most goals in NHL history against the New York Islanders.

The 39-year-old, who potted a pair in their 5-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, now has 41 goals in 60 games, an incredible pace.

Over his career, he's tormented the Islanders, with 44 goals in 71 games, but he was not available in the first two meetings between these two this season because of a broken leg.

Islanders head coach Patrick Roy will address the media at 11:10, but we expect that Ilya Sorokin will be in between the pipes for the potentially historic game at UBS Arena.

That might prove to be a problem for Ovechkin, who has only faced Sorokin three times since the Russian netminder broke into the league in 2021.

It doesn't feel correct, given how many times the Islanders battle the Capitals, but Ovechkin must have been hurt a bit more, since Sorokin has faced the Capitals seven total times in his career.

In those three games, Ovechkin has had four shots.

Sorokin didn't really have an interest in talking about Ovechkin, as it's probably a nightmare for any goaltender who has to be the one to go down in history with the Great 8.

But, it would probably be a tremendous feeling for Sorokin if he gets to say that out of Ovechkin's 895 career goals (when he breaks the record), he never had to clear one out from his net.
