After a contract stalemate over term length, the longtime captain hits the open market. New York’s veteran leader now seeks a new home as several suitors circle.

Anders Lee was unable to come to terms on a contract extension with the New York Islanders and will be going to the market.

Lee, who just completed the final season of a seven-year deal worth $7 million annually, was looking for two years on a new deal, while I'm told general manager Mathieu Darche drew a line in the sand at one:

Lee, who sits 77 games from reaching 1,000 games all with the Islanders, has served as the club's captain since 2018.

A deal can still come together between the two sides during free agency, but there will be plenty of suitors for Lee, as he's going to be one of the top names available.

Keep an eye on the Minnesota Wild.
