After missing training camp due to knee inflammation, the star playmaker’s surprise return to team drills signals a major boost for New York ahead of their clash with Chicago.

ELMONT, NY -- New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal did not take part in the team's morning skate on Thursday ahead of their game against the Chicago Blackhawks, but he did skate on his own. 

Barzal, 28, had missed the first three games of the regular season -- he'll miss his fourth --  after inflammation in his left knee from a previous injury sidelined him for all of training camp and preseason. 

With defenseman Alexander Romanov out with a torn right ACL, the Islanders can just place him on Injured Reserve, which would open the roster spot for 

Barzal is in season four of an eight-year deal worth $9.25 million annually.
