Derek Lalonde is out in Detroit.

On Thursday, the Detroit Red Wings fired head coach Derek Lalonde, replacing him with Todd McClellan.

Lalonde had been with the Red Wings spent two and a half season the head coach in Detroit, took on a flawed roster.

General manager Steve Yzerman had failed to fix the necessary areas of the roster to bolster a group that included Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider.

The signings of Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko haven’t been enough to mask the goaltending woes, with Yzerman failing to get a true No. 1 netminder since Jimmy Howard.

The Red Wings seem one year behind the New York Islanders.

General manager Lou Lamoriello fired Lane Lambert after a season and half as the first-time head coach struggled to get the most out of the roster. In a year since, Patrick Roy has struggled more with a better roster.

Unlike the Red Wings, the Islanders have had stability in goal with Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov.
