It makes no sense for the Canucks to stop taking calls on Pettersson.
If the New York Islanders can acquire Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks, it would be a franchise-altering move.
It's a fit that makes too much sense, with his buddy Bo Horvat on Long Island and Pettersson seemingly needing a change in scenery.
Despite the Canucks moving J.T. Miller to the cross-town rival New York Rangers, an industry source shared with The Hockey News that Pettersson remaining with Vancouver wasn't 100% yes.
The Islanders' interest in Pettersson still remains high, and that likely won't change. However, it takes two to tango and winning may have impacted Vancouver's mind, at least for a little bit.
The Canucks entered the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off break winners of three straight and now sit in the second wild-card spot in the West.
Pettersson is playing a tad better, which led to a report that Vancouver has decided to stop "shopping" him, pulling his name off the trade board.
That's incredibly doubtful.
Even if they don't want to move him right now or are still trying to decide on their next move, a front office will always listen to offers.
With Pettersson at 4 Nations, representing Team Sweden, the chances are slim that a move would come while he's there. But slim doesn't mean none:
Most general managers have more time on their hands now than usual, so don't be shocked if we see some trades happen as soon as this break comes to a close.
Not taking calls on Pettersson, a player the organization has to decide on before his no-trade clause kicks in on July 1, makes no logical sense.
Now, with the way the Canucks have played, there's no rush for them to trade Pettersson--if they intend to do that--before the NHL Trade Deadline.
They have the power to wait and can always move him at the 2025 NHL Draft if they want to see what he can bring down the stretch run and in the playoffs, if Vancouver qualifies.
But will they get a better offer by the deadline or at the draft?
Like many teams, the Islanders are clearly interested in boosting their top six with an elite player.
Depending on what the Islanders do at the trade deadline--they're tryin'—to keep Brock Nelson, but we'll see--who knows what—kind of assets add that will make Pettersson or another forward more feasible?
A trade for a Pettersson isn't as simple as a "trade Noah Dobson and a prospect."
Because of money, this would be a complicated move with a few moving parts. The question is, what would it take to get over the finish line?
