On Tuesday, the New York Islanders announced that Lou Lamoriello would not be back with the club after seven seasons.
Since arriving to Long Island in May of 2018, the Hockey Hall of Fame general manager made 19 trades.
Let's have a look at each one of them, starting with re-acquiring Matt Martin.
July 3, 2018: Islanders re-acquire Matt Martin from TOR for Eamon McAdam
Note: This trade allowed for NYI to get their identity line back, which played a vital role in the team's identity under Lamoriello
Oct. 12, 2020: Islanders trade Devon Towes to COL for a 2021 2nd & a 2022 2nd
Note: A trade that will haunt the Islanders forever, Lamoriello felt that he had no choice given Toews' upcoming deal, his struggles in the 2020 playoffs and wanting to keep Nick Leddy. Toews has gone on to become the defenseman the Islanders have been longing for.
Feb. 16, 2020: Islanders acquire Andy Greene from NJD for 2021 2nd, David Quenneville
Note: Noah Dobson struggled during his rookie season, and Lamoriello brought in a stable, stay-at-home defenseman to help simplify things for the youngster and the backend.
Feb. 24, 2020: Islanders acquire Jordan Schmaltz from TOR for Matt Lorito
Note: I have no recollections of this trade, but Schmaltz became a hockey podcaster after his career ended.
Feb. 24, 2020: Islanders acquire Jean-Gabriel Pageau from OTT for a 2020 conditional first, a 2020 2nd & a 2022 conditional 3rd
Note: Pageau was one of the top-three players available at the deadline and the Islanders don't make it to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals without him.
Apr. 8, 2021: Islanders acquire Kyle Palmieri & Travis Zajac from NJD for A.J. Greer, Mason Jobst, a 2021 first and a 2022 fourth
Note: Another top trade-deadline name, Lamoriello got the Islanders a much-needed goal scorer, allowing them to move on from Eberle that summer. Injuries impacted Palmieri's first few seasons with the club before become one of their most consistent forwards over the last two seasons.
Apr. 11, 2021: Islanders acquire Braydon Coburn from PHI for a 2022 7th
Note: Gearing up for what they hoped would be a long playoff run, the Islanders added a depth defenseman with 137 career playoff games
July 16, 2021: Islanders trade Nick Leddy to DET for Richard Panik, 2021 2nd
Note: Leddy was a salary-cap casualty, moving him a week before the 2021 Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft
July 17, 2021: Islanders trade Andrew Ladd, a 2021 2nd, a 2022 conditional 2nd & a 2023 conditional 3rd to ARI
Note: A bad signing by Garth Snow, Lamoriello found a way to get Ladd's $5.5 million cap hit off the books, the final two seasons of what was a seven-year deal.
Nov. 4, 2021: Islanders Trade Johnny Boychuk to BUF for future considerations
Note: Unfortunately, Boychuk was never going to play again after sustaining a career-ending eye injury in the playoffs. NYI was able to clear $6 million off the books.
July 7, 2022: Islanders acquire Alexander Romanov, a 2022 4th from MTL for 2022 1st (No. 13)
Note: The Islanders took a chance that a young Romanov could become a blue line staple, which he has. They drafted Isaiah George with the fourth-rounder. MTL flipped the first to CHI for Kirby Dach, a move that failed miserably. CHI drafted Frank Nazar.
Jan. 20, 2023: Islanders acquire Bo Horvat from VAN for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Räty & a 2023 conditional first
Note: While Vancouver flipped the first first for top-pairing defenseman Filip Hronek turning this deal into a win-win, the Islanders got a star for a struggling veteran and an unproven prospect.
Feb. 28, 2023: Islanders acquire Pierre Engvall from TOR for a 2024 third
Note: The Islanders needed to get faster and Engvall provided that, finding a home alongside Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri, aruglably the club's best line down the stretch and in the 2023 first-round series against Carolina.
June 29, 2023: Islanders Trade Josh Bailey and a 2026 2nd to CHI for future considerations
Note: Bailey, who had one more year left on his deal at $5 million, was no longer an every day player and it was time to move on from him.
Dec. 28, 2023: Islanders acquire Robert Bortuzzo from STL for a 2024 7th
Note: The Islanders had big injuries to their blue line and were in need of a stay-at-home veteran defenseman. Bortuzzo, who became the only player on the roster to have won a Stanley Cup, ended up with a long-term injury. He did assist on Mathew Barzal's deflection in overtime of Game 4 at UBS Arena, the biggest goal scored in that building.
May 24, 2024: Islanders acquire a 2024 1st (No. 20), and two 2024 2nds (No. 54, No. 61) from CHI for a 2024 first (No. 18 & a 2024 2nd (No. 50)
Note: The Islanders, who lacked draft capital, added an extra second. They took Cole Eiserman, Jesse Pulkkinnen and Kamil Bednarik with those picks.
Jan. 27, 2025: Islanders acquire Scott Perunovich from STL for a 2026 conditional 5th
Note: The Islanders were in need of another defenseman and the former Hobey Baker winner wasn't playing much. He didn't play much with the Islanders, but showcased a skill that the club desperately needed. Because Perunovich didn't play in 20 games (11), the Islanders did not have to send a pick to STL.
March 6, 2025: Islanders Trade Brock Nelson, William Dufour to COL for Calum Ritchie, Oliver Kylington, a 2026 conditional first & a 2028 conditional third
Note: With Nelson not re-signing at the number and years offered, the Islanders had no choice. They got back what was believed to be an untouchable prospect, along with two picks in what was a trade that signified the end of an era.
*The Islanders flipped Kylington to ANA for future considerations,
March 7, 2025: Islanders Trade Dennis Cholowski to NJD for Adam Beckman
Note: Cholowski won the 7th defenseman job out of training camp but struggled defensively before losing his job. Beckman played well to close out his season with Bridgeport, before earning an 8-game suspension for "abuse" of an official
