Former New York Islanders player and coach Doug Weight commented on the passion of the Islanders fan base while appearing on the Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast:
Weight spent the final three seasons of his 1,238-game playing career with the Islanders, recording 64 points (13 goals, 51 assists) across 107 games.
He was with the Islanders during John Tavares’ first two years on Long Island after the team won the 2009 Draft Lottery.
Weight later served as head coach from midway through the 2016-17 season to the end of 2017-18, posting a 59-49-14 record over 122 games.
He now works as a Senior Advisor with the San Jose Sharks.
On the podcast, Weight joked that he is "not happy" the Islanders jumped the Sharks to land the first overall pick, bumping San Jose down to second.
