After going unqualified by New York, the productive AHL fan favorite heads overseas to join Salavat Yulaev, ending his tenure within the Islanders' system for a Russian roster.

Former New York Islanders forward Matthew Maggio has signed with the KHL's Salavat Yualev.

Maggio, 23, was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders and became a fan favorite during his three-plus seasons with the Bridgeport Islanders of the American Hockey League.

In 187 games in Bridgeport, Maggio recorded 35 goals with 46 assists for 81 points, serving as a leader through some dark times for the club's AHL affiliate.

Maggio was an expiring restricted free agent but was not tenured a qualifying offer.
