Former Islanders & Wild Forward Cal Clutterbuck Announces Retirement From NHL

A long time New York Islander has officially called it quits and retired from the National Hockey League.

After 17 years in the NHL split between the Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders, Cal Clutterbuc, 37 has officially announced his retirement via his newly created Instagram account:

Clutterbuck, nicknamed “Clutter,” spent the last year away from the ice, but did not officially call it a career until now. He was drafted in the third round in 2006, 72nd overall by the Minnesota Wild. He spent the first six seasons of his career in Minnesota before the remaining eleven were here on Long Island.

His last season was the 2023-24 campaign, where Clutterbuck played the entire 82-game schedule for the first time in his career. Playing a hard hitting, fast paced, and agressive style of hockey, Clutterbuck has dealt with many injuries in his career.

He was a key piece of the Islanders identity line for many years alongside Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin. Clutterbuck congratulated Martin on Instagram a few days earlier as he is also speculated to hang up the skates.

Clutterbuck ends his career as the NHL’s all time hit leader with 4,029 hits. His buddy Martin is in second place with 3,936.

He also scored some big goals for the Islanders during his career, proving to be a big-time player, and more than being just a hard-hitting forechecker. He participated in seven Islanders appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including two runs to the conference finals.

Clutterbuck closes his career with 1,064 games played, 143 goals, and 150 assists, for 293 points. In his eleven years with the Islanders, he played 718 games, scoring 81 goals and tallying 102 assists for 183 points.

He has made Long Island his home and has represented the community effectively through his local involvement. Isles fans will see more of him as he spent part of this past season as an analyst with Shannon Hogan on MSG Networks Islanders coverage.

Congratulations Cal Clutterbuck on your retirement and a wonderful career.
