Sorokin's 30 saves and Holmstrom's three points led the Islanders to a 5-2 victory over the Avalanche.

ELMONT, NY -- The New York Islanders extended their winning streak to five games on Tuesday versus the Colorado Avalanche in a dominant 5-2 win at UBS Arena.

The win helped the Isles inch up the standings and sweep the season series from Colorado, as they defeated the Avalanche 6-2 in Colorado on Oct. 14.

New York Islanders left wing Anders Lee (27) scores a goal against Colorado Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood (39) during the second period

The Avalanche Jonathan Drouin-Nathan MacKinnon-Martin Necas line started the game buzzing, sending Isles netminder Ilya Sorokin sprawling side to side several times early, but Colorado could not capitalize.

On the other end, Max Tsyplakov made a nifty move up the middle, giving the Islanders forward a superb opportunity that Avalanche goalie Mackenzie Blackwood turned aside.

At 16:2,0 the Avalanche got their first power play when J.G. Pageau was called for hooking Logan O'Connor.

While shorthanded, Alexander Romanov laid a tremendous open-ice hit on Cale Makar.

Makar was replaced by Devin Toews at the point, and the Isles killed the remainder of the penalty to Pageau

The first period ended with the Avalanche leading 14-11 in shots while neither team could light the lamp.

4:11 into the second period, the Islanders struck first.

Tony DeAngelo started the play by firing the puck rink-wide to Brock Nelson, who sent the puck back across to captain Anders Lee, who buried his 22nd goal of the season.

Minutes later, Lee was called for slashing Toews and the Avs went back to the power play -- however the Islanders successfully killed it.

Shots were 22-13 for Colorado just after the halfway point of the game, but many of those shots were outside or low-quality chance shots.

On the heels of a very questionable icing call, and with the Isles having tired players on the ice  -- the Avalanche took full advantage, as Mackinnon found Artturi Lehkonen across the crease for a beautiful finish from his knees, making the score 1-1.

The goal was Lehkonen's 21st of the season, coming with 7:00 remaining in the second period.

After two periods, the teams went to the dressing rooms tied 1-1, while the Avalanche led 25-18 in shots.

1:54 into the third period, Avalanche defenseman Sam Malinski couldn't handle the puck behind his own net. Simon Holmstrom popped out in front of the net with the puck -- and fired a laser past Blackwood for an Islanders 2-1 lead.

Ross Colton scored the equalizer 4:39 into the second, but Islanders coac, Patrick Roy challenged for goalie interference. The challenge determined that there was goaltender interference and the Isles remained up 2-1.

Then, Lee's cross-crease feed found Bo Horvat, who went up high past Blackwood at 11:23.

Scott Perunovich, the Islanders' latest addition, registered an assist on the play. Horvat also extended his point streak to six games.

Minutes later, the Avalanche got back within a goal when a fresh off-the-bench Jack Drury received a wide-open feed by Martin Necas before putting a wrist shot past Sorokin at 14:55.

This was Drury's second goal in three games since joining the Avalanche, while Necas registered his fourth assist in three games.

Following an offensive zone faceoff, a Romanov wrist shot from the blue line snuck its way through traffic to beat Blackwood at 17:31.

This was Romanov's second goal of the season and his second in consecutive games.

Holmstrom and Casey Cizikas recorded assists on the goal.

With just over a minute to go, Holmstrom received a Pageau feed to put the Islanders up 5-2.

Holmstrom finished the night with three points, improving his season totals to 11 goals, 15 assists, and 26 points in 42 games.
