Thirteenth overall pick Malte Gustafsson will remain in Sweden to prioritize his SHL campaign with HV71, deferring his North American arrival until the conclusion of the season.
Swedish defenseman Malte Gustafsson, who the New York Islanders selected 13th overall at the 2026 NHL Draft will not take part in the club's upcoming rookie camp or training camp, The Hockey News has learned.
Gustafsson, 18, is focusing on the beginning of his SHL season, his second season with HV71.
The situation mimicks that of fellow Sweden Victor Eklund, who the Islanders drafted 16th overall in 2025. After taking part in development camp, he remained in Sweden to prepare for his final SHL season before joining the Islanders organization come season's end.
THN is told that Gustafsson plans to follow in Eklund's footsteps and come to North America at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.
SHL's preseason action starts in a few days, running from Sept. 4 through Sept. 12 before Gustaffson and HV71 host the Malmö Redhawks to kick off their regular season.
In 27 games with HV71 in 2025-26, Gustafsson recorded three assists. He also played 19 gaves with their junior affiliate, recording four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 19 games.
The Islanders signed Gustafsson to his three-year entry-level deal on July 14.
