The New York Islanders have activated goaltender Marcus Hogberg off of injured reserve ahead of their game against the Anaheim Ducks:
The 30-year-old, who sustained an upper-body injury in their 3-2 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 25, was expected to be back or close to it when the NHL resumed play following the 4 Nations Face-Off break.
But, Hogberg wasn't ready, only returning to a team practice on Friday.
In Hogberg's absence, Sorokin has started 13 of 14, with Jakub Skarek getting one start, a 6-3 loss to the Florida Panthers.
Skarek did relieve Sorokin, playing the third period of their 5-1 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden last week.
Hogberg has killed it in his limited game action this season, posting a 1.45 GAA and a .947 SV% in seven appearances since being recalled once Semyon Varlamov went down.
If the Islanders are going to make the playoffs, their goaltending will have to be rock solid.
While Sorokin will be relied upon heavily, the Islanders have a more trustworthy option to turn to going forward.
