Romanov was injured on a late-game boarding major. A costly hit against the Stars leaves Islanders fans anxiously awaiting an update on their defenseman's status.

With 27.3 seconds to play in the third period, Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen hit New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov from behind, leading to an injury:

After a review, Rantanen was officially given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.

Romanov was helped off the ice by trainer Damien Hess and teammate Kyle Palmieri. It did not look good at all as we await to see the results.

The 25-year-old, who signed an eight-year extension worth $6.25 million annually this summer, has already missed five games this season with an upper-body injury and has had injuries in the past.

The Islanders are off on Wednesday before concluding their road trip against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. We likely won't hear anything on Romanov -- maybe a call-up which signifies something -- until Thursday morning's skate.

THN can confirm that Rantanen will not be receiving any  furthe discipline for the hit as we now await an update on Romanov's status.

The Islanders battle the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night at 7 PM ET.
