    ELMONT, NY – The New York Islanders fell to the Seattle Kraken 2-1 in a shootout on Tuesday night. The Kraken played on the second half of a back-to-back but were able to get the job done.

    Ilya Sorokin stopped 29 of 30 Kraken shots and was given the loss, where Philip Grubauer got the win for Seattle with 26 saves.

    Matty Beniers scored the opening goal for the Kraken 5:27 into the game. He was drilled by a hit in the corner before recovering and receiving the puck in the neutral zone, skating in on a 2-on-1 and ripping it past Sorokin.

    The play was set up by Ryan Pulock jawing with Jordan Eberle after the hit, which led Pulock astray and out of position, opening up space. Jared McCann picked up the goal's lone assist.

    With 11:51 on the clock Sorokin made an outstanding save, sticking out his pad after the puck took a funky deflection. The play went to review, where it was confirmed that the puck did not cross the goal line, keeping the score at a 1-0 Kraken lead.

    The Islanders were given a four-minute power play with 5:36 remaining in the first period when Andre Burakovsky high sticked J.G. Pageau. New York failed to capitalize with only three shots in the four minutes.

    After 20 minutes the Islanders found themselves down 1-0 after a lackluster first period. However, the Islanders did lead in shots 9-7 after the first.

    The second period opened with the Kraken dominating play. New York was pinned in their zone for an extensive stretch.

    Special teams became a factor in the latter portion of the second period. The Islanders although being heavily outplayed, tied the game up at one on the power play with 5:23 to go in the period.

    Mat Barzal made a tight pass to Kyle Palmieri just outside the crease, where Palmieri buried the puck. Noah Dobson received the secondary assist.

    The Islanders killed off a penalty shortly after the goal. It was taken by Simon Holmstrom with 5:01 left.

    The middle period closed at an even 1-1 score. The Islanders edged the Kraken in total shots, 19-17. Both teams had 10 in the second period.

    In the third, both teams traded time in the offensive zone. Neither team developed any grade-A chances until Bo Horvat narrowly missed one in the final minute.

    The shots ended regulation with Seattle leading 30-27. The score was tied at one after sixty minutes and needed overtime to settle it.

    The Islanders had some solid shots in overtime but did not score. Palmieri was assessed with a tripping penalty with 1:49 to go in overtime, setting up Seattle for a 4-on-3 power play.

    After 1:17 on the power play, Jaden Schwartz took a slashing penalty to bring it back to 3-on-3 for the final 35 seconds of overtime. The time expired a shootout was needed to decide the winner.

    Tomas Tatar had the lone goal in the shootout and the Kraken defeated the Islanders 2-1. Tonight’s loss is the 13th the Islanders have suffered in overtime or a shootout this season.
