Mathieu Darche shuts down trade speculation surrounding the veteran defenseman, clarifying that neither the player nor the team has initiated a move despite significant interest from outside suitors.
ELMONT, NY -- Defenseman Scott Mayfield has not asked the New York Islanders to trade him, nor has the club asked him to waive his full no-trade clause, according to general manager Mathieu Darche.
His agent, Matt Keator, was in the building for their 3-2 win over the Anaheium Ducks, an agent who represents players on both sides, as well.
"I can tell you right now, there's no truth to any of those rumors. I saw them this morning," Darche said. "His agent was here the last two days because he had a player on the other team, and he has a few players on our team, so there's none of that."
Keator also represents Islanders forward Emil Heineman.
Now, that doesn't mean teams haven't called the Islanders inquiring.
The Hockey News believes that the Philadelphia Flyers, Winnipeg Jets, and Toronto Maple Leafs are among many teams that have contacted Darche.
It's GM's job to inquire, so despite it blowing up on social media, that news isn't earth-shattering stuff.
Mayfield, who didn't crack the starting lineup after training camp and has only played twice in the team's first eight games, is a pro's pro and, at least at this point, wants to see this through with the Islanders.
The 34-year-old blue liner is in the fourth year of a seven-year deal worth $3.5 million annually.
