New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche announced on Thursday that he has elected to retain Patrick Roy as the club's head coach.
Darche shared that assistant coach John MacLean and Tommy Albelin, who former general manager Lou Lamoriello hired, were relieved of their duties.
Assistant coach Benoit Desrosiers, who coached with Roy in Quebec and joined his staff on Long Island a month or so after the Hockey Hall of Famer got the gig, will remain with the team.
"I think Patrick's a winner. He's had success coaching. When he came here the first year, he did have success," Darche said. "I didn't know Patrick. Obviously, I know a lot of people in the hockey world. I've been on the phone a lot, and I went to meet with him last weekend just to get to know him more. And I'm extremely comfortable and excited to be working with him. I know he's passionate. He works hard, and I just decided that was my decision to make changes in the coaching staff, and now Patrick and I will work together to fill the assistant coaches position."
The new GM also shared that Rick Kowalsky and the entire Bridgeport Islanders staff have been let go.
Roy has gone 55-47-17 in his season and a half as the Isles bench boss.
