As the 2024 NFL season kicked off on Thursday, the New York Islanders made up a small part of the league's season opener. During a graphics package used on NBC, the team was used to compare the dominance of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs, the reigning two-time Super Bowl champions, enter the season eyeing a "three-peat" of Vince Lombardi Trophies, a feat that's rarely accomplished in the sports world. However, when looking around other notable runs of three-straight titles, the New York Islanders made the broadcast's conversation.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. (12) scores a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers in overtime during Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium.Among other teams highlighted in the package were the New York Yankees (1998-2000), Los Angeles Lakers (2000-2002) and Green Bay Packers (1965-67).
A run of three-straight championships is something that's been done four other times, split evenly between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. However, the Islanders' run was part of one of the greatest dynasties in NHL history, winning four consecutive Stanley Cups and 19-straight playoff series, a record that still stands today.
Whether or not the Chiefs are able to win that third ring or even match the Islanders' dyansty is for fate to decide. Regardless, in the realm of professional sports, New York's dominance is one of the measuring sticks of prolonged success in professional sports.
