For those that do not know, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal is a big equipment guy. It turns out that he gets his gloves customized by a man named Marco "The Wolf" Argentino, a CCM employee who customizes gear for many top players.
Argentino was recently interviewed by Luke Lederer (tapelike) on Instagram about customizing Barzal's gloves.
Wolf mentioned that the Islanders forward uses an older glove model, the HG12, which is favored by players for its increased mobility.
Additionally, Barzal requests that the thumbpiece on the palm of the glove be detached from the back of the glove, providing him with even more mobility.
He also uses a thin palm layer that is tacky for a better grip.
How many gloves does he go through in a season?
The answer is probably more than you’d think.
“Barzal probably goes through 15–20 pairs a season,” Argentino said. “Sometimes, he’ll send me four, five, or six pairs at a time. I’ll do those, send them back, and then I’ll get another five or six pairs at Christmas time and just before the playoffs again.”
According to “The Wolf,” that’s much more than some players.
“Some guys will go with two pairs for an entire season, and some go six to seven pairs,” Argentino said. “Some guys are on the bench changing gloves between periods. They always want something.”
