The New York Islanders have parted ways with assistant strength and conditioning coach Derrek Douglas, initially reported by the New York Post and confirmed by The Hockey News.
THN can confirm that this move, along with the dismissal of head equipment manager Leni DiCostanzo, occurred before last Tuesday when the organization announced that it would not be renewing Lou Lamoriello's contract.
Douglas had been with the Islanders since the 2011-12 season. Before the start of the 2024-25 season, the Islanders brought in Travis McMaster. He was the former strength and conditioning coach of the New Zealand Rugby's All Blacks Sevens team.
The Islanders have frequently faced injury issues over the last few seasons, but 2024-25 might have been the worst. The Islanders lost Anthony Duclair long-term due to a groin injury from which he never fully recovered. Mathew Barzal missed 52 games with two separate injuries. Each starting defenseman missed time with backup netminder Semyon Varlamov's season ending in early December.
