New York Islanders prospect Jesse Nurmi is a Memorial Cup Champion after the London Knights defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1 on Sunday night:
Nurmi, drafted in the fourth round (No. 113) of the 2023 NHL Draft, elected to come to North America after beginning his career in Finland. He and the Islanders thought it would be better for his development, and they were right.
He was selected 58th overall by London in the CHL's 2024 Import Draft, recording 31 points (nine goals, 22 assists) in 58 regular season games before tallying eight points (three goals, five assists) in 17 playoff games.
Nurmi recorded one goal in five Memorial Cup games:
The Finnish forward signed his three-year entry-level deal on June 12, 2024, and will join the Islanders organization for 2025-26. He is likely to play for the revamped Bridgeport Islanders this fall.
Nurmi participated in the 2025 World Junior Championships, recording five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games for Finland, and won a silver medal after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Americans.
