Fresh off a victory over Toronto, the injury bug bites New York as two key forwards face weeks sidelined, forcing immediate roster shuffling and an emergency AHL recall.
The New York Islanders will be without forward Matias Maccelli for the next 2-4 weeks while forward Cal Ritchie will be out for the next 4-6 weeks, both due to lower-body injuries sustained in the first period of their 4-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Maccelli, 26, started the season on fire for the Islanders, posting two goals and six points through seven games:
Ritchie suffered the injury on his first shift of the night, and did not return.
The play itself looks like nothing, but those are often the most serious injuries in sports, as even a minor issue can quickly become something more serious.
Over eight games, Ritchie had one goal and one assist, but looked to be turning the corner after a slower-than-expected start.
In the interim, Kyle MacLean will step into the lineup, while the team has emergency recalled Mitchell Chaffee from the Hamilton Hammers.
