Russian teams have been ruled ineligible for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

This decision is an extension of a ban that began in February 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

For the New York Islanders, this means Ilya Sorokin, Alexander Romanov, Maxim Tsyplakov, and Semyon Varlamov will not be able to participate in the tournament as they are each Russian.

This does not mean the Islanders will be without representation, as Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, and Noah Dobson are contenders for Team Canada, while Simon Holmstrom could be considered for Team Sweden.

    The 2026 Winter Olympics begin Feb. 6, 2026 , through Feb. 22, 2026.
