With Alexander Romanov sidelined, New York scouts are targeting defensive reinforcements. Financial flexibility and strategic LTIR moves could pave the way for a crucial deadline acquisition.
The New York Islanders had scouts in the building for the Toronto Maple Leafs' matchup against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.
The Maple Leafs may also have interest in 26-year-old Matt Kessel, as well, as he's younger than the 34-year-old Scott Mayfield.
Despite adding Logan Stanley, the Islanders are in the market for a left-side defenseman, with Alexander Romanov sidelined with a torn ACL.
He's currently on Injured Reserve, but has not been ruled out for the playoffs just yet.
The Islanders currently have $2.227 million in available space, and if they need more, they can place Romanov on Long-Term Injured Reserve, which would increase that number to $6.19 million.
Per the new CBA, a team gets full cap relief from a player's contract only if he's placed on Season-Ending LTIR. If just LTIR, they get the average of the NHL salaries from the season prior, which is $3.97 million.
This is something worth watching as the season progresses.
