With blue-line injuries mounting, the veteran defenseman secures a roster spot to bolster a depleted defensive corps ahead of a crucial matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes.
ELMONT, NY -- The New York Islanders announced on Thursday that they have signed defenseman Ben Hutton to a one-year deal.
Hutton was signed to a Professional Tryout on Sunday and skated in his second team skate Thursday morning.
The Islanders had until Nov. 11 for his PTO to expire, but with Ryan Pulock (upper body) out for 2-4 weeks, the club decided to officially bring him aboard.
The club is also without Alexander Romanov for the regular season and potentially the playoffs after he tore his ACL on Oct. 7.
Hutton will battle for minutes with Matt Kessel and Scott Mayfield. Given how Mayfield has played lately on the penalty kill, he could make his Islanders debut on Thursday night in Kessel's spot against the Carolina Hurricanes.
