The New York Islanders now hold a four-game point streak (2-0-2), picking up six of eight points in that stretch.
ELMONT, NY – The New York Islanders will have a little more to be thankful for at the dinner table tomorrow. The club defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at UBS Arena on Wednesday, giving the Isles two wins in a row heading into Thanksgiving.
For the fourth time in their last five games, it was the Islanders who opened the scoring. After Oliver Wahlstrom won a puck free on the right wing corner, Anders Lee came from behind the net and jammed away at the puck in front. His second chance squeaked past Carter Hart, giving the Islanders a 1-0 lead on the captain’s second goal of the season.
New York outshot Philadelphia 9-7 in the opening frame but had eight turnovers to the Flyers’ one. Ilya Sorokin was forced to make several big saves to keep the Islanders’ lead through 20 minutes.
In the second, the Islanders added to their lead just over 13 minutes in. After killing off a Flyers power play, New York capitalized on a man advantage of their own. After a Pierre Engvall drop pass to Adam Pelech at the right point, a long-range shot found Brock Nelson’s stick in front of Hart.
Nelson’s ninth goal of the year, and 250th of his NHL career, gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead. He becomes the eighth player in Islanders history to reach the milestone with the team.
The two-goal lead was short-lived, despite Sorokin’s best efforts. After a sprawling save to his right on a shot from Cam York, the defenseman stuck with it and buried the rebound to cut the Islander lead in half at 14:18.
The goal was York’s third of the campaign from Owen Tippett and Ryan Poehling. York notched his second red light in as many games while Tippett kept his hot streak going. The helper was his eighth point in six games, totaling five goals and three assists.
In the third period, which has recently been the Islanders’ Achilles heel, they opened the scoring. Adam Pelech started a three-on-two the other way, finding Engvall on the right side. Engvall dotted a pass to Nelson on the left side in front, burying his second of the night and giving New York a 3-1 edge at 2:33 of the frame.
Nelson’s two goals extended his point streak to four games. He has four goals and a helper in that span.
However, the Islanders weren’t out of the woods yet. After Noah Dobson got knocked down behind the net, an Adam Pelech turnover found the stick of Bobby Brink at the right point. He sent one in front for Joel Farabee, who finished the play to cut the lead in half at 15:56.
That was the closest Philadelphia could get. The Islanders slammed the door to finish off the victory. With the win, New York now holds a four-game point streak (2-0-2), picking up six of eight points in that stretch.
