The Islanders’ blue-line unicorn continues to rewrite NHL history, surpassing legends like Bobby Orr while logging unprecedented ice time and clutch goals in a historic teenage campaign.
Matthew Schaefer.
There is no one, anywhere in hockey history, like this superstar defenseman. Every single game he plays, he seemingly breaks a new record.
Thursday night in Minnesota, Schaefer stole the show. Schaefer posted two goals and three points in New York's 4-3 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild.
Schaefer scored a dazzling overtime winner:
The three-point night extended his point streak to six games and gave Schaefer 14 points in 12 games. He's got at least one point in 9 of the Islanders' last 10 games.
With his Thursday night performance, he broke about 20 different records of all shapes and sizes.
The final list of accomplishments and stats read like an encyclopedia of both Islanders' and NHL history:
Somehow, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Connor McDavid. None of them have ever posted a multi-goal game, including an OT winner, with an assist, all while playing over 30 minutes.
As Brendan Burke once said, "This kid's incredible."
Yet, still, it's not over yet. Below stats via Eric Hornick.
Schaefer recorded his 71st, 72nd and 73rd points, passing both Scott Stevens and Bobby Orr to move into 5th place on the teenage defenseman point list. He is 59 points behind Phil Housley’s teenage record.
Schaefer now has 27 goals in his career, passing Pat LaFontaine for 2nd place among Isles teenagers.
It's the Calder Trophy-winning defenseman's fifth game-winning goal, pulling into a tie with Bryan Trottier for the most by any Islanders teenager.
Schaefer now has back-to-back 30-minute games, making him the youngest-ever to do it in the NHL. No one under 21 has ever done it before.
Schaefer played over 25 minutes again, the 51st time in his first 95 career games. No other player has done that more than 45 times (Brock Faber).
The defenseman has played at least 20:00 in 83 straight games. That's the longest streak in NHL history by a teenager in a single season since ice time became official and the longest by an Islander since Mark Streit set the record (since 1997-98) by doing so in 141 consecutive games from 2009-2011.
After reading all of those stats, sitting and digesting, it's just further confirmation.
There is absolutely no one on the planet like Matthew Schaefer. He's a unicorn, a once-in-a-lifetime player that landed on Long Island because a ping pong ball came up with the number 13 in May 2025.
As the season rolls on, Schaefer's going to keep on shattering more and more records.
His next chance to pen more records comes Saturday afternoon against McDavid, Evan Bouchard, and the Edmonton Oilers on Halloween.
