The most consistent thing about the New York Islanders' 2024-25 season is Kyle Palmieri's willingness to sign an extension.
The 34-year-old, in every media scrum, has spoken about how much this organization means to him in the five seasons he's been here and that he wants to be here going forward.
“Yeah, I mean to me, this organization means a lot," Palmieri told to me on Apr. 16. "I think it’s one of those things that I have made pretty clear, that I've wanted to stay.”
Then, on locker room cleanout day, Palmieri had this to say.
"We got some time here. I think after today, we'll find a way to see where everyone's at and and go from there. I've made it clear that that I want to be here, and I want to be a part of the future here, and I think Lou knows that, and we'll try and and find a way to get something done."
Palmieri, who has arguably been one of the most consistent players since Patrick Roy joined the team in late January 2024, has managed to stay healthy over the last two seasons.
For the first time in his NHL career, he played in all 82 games in back-to-back seasons.
"My first two full years here, it was tough. I missed a lot of time, and some of the things were a little out of my control," Palmieri said. "But I think it's something to be proud of. I'm really proud of the of the fact that I was able to do it back-to-back years for the first time in my career, and hopefully that good health just continues."
Palmieri had 48 points (24 goals, 24 assists) in 82 games.
However, since March 7th's NHL Trade Deadline, he only had seven points (four goals, three assists) in the final 21 games of the season.
The Islanders have 12 pending free agents, including Palmieri, to make decisions on before free agency begins.
The question is, how low is Palmieri, who is on an expiring deal worth $5 million annually, willing to go on his next deal?
As I've heard since the trade deadline, the offer to Palmieri was believed to be between two and three years at an annual average cap hit below $5 million.
With the cap rising exponentially and the Islanders needing to utilize any of their extra cap space to improve the roster, they would need Palmieri's deal to be cap-friendly.
