Robert Edwards-Imagn ImagesThe New York Islanders likely, given the market, had the ability to trade pending unrestricted free agent Kyle Palmieri.
However, unlike Brock Nelson, who turned down a reported three-year deal worth north of $7.5 million, it's clear that the Islanders believe they can retain Palmieri, on "their terms."
"We're talking to Kyle," Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "We'd like to keep Kyle, but once again, under our terms, similar to a Brock, because a player like that, with the young players that will be infused in this lineup, you still have to have players that can play, and he brings a certain element. But it might not happen. We'll see."
The belief is that the Islanders have offered Palmieri, who is on an expiring deal worth $5 million annually, a two-to-three year deal worth between $4 and $5 million.
The question is, will Palmieri take it?
It was clear with Nelson that the Islanders had drawn a line in the sand, understanding the importance of not just having as much salary cap as possible going forward, but how much money is given to aging veterans.
Palmieri is a great player and will need to play well if the Islanders want to have any chance of making the playoffs, which is their plan.
So, if the Islanders can come to a rather team-friendly deal with Palmieri, he'll be back. But if not, the Islanders seem okay with letting him walk for nothing this summer.
