On Tuesday, the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears announced that their head coach and general manager Matt Carkner was leaving the organizationt to purse a new coaching opportunity in the American Hockey League.

The job he is leaving for could be the person that becomes the next Bridgeport Islanders head coach after New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche relieved Rick Kowalsky and his staff of their duties.

Carkner, who played two of his NHL seasons with the Islanders, served as a Bridgeport assistant under Brent Thompson from 2016 to 2021 before heading to Orlando.

He would be a perfect for the Islanders in Bridgeport as he also has a conenction to Darche, given that Orlando is the Tampa Bay Lightning's ECHL affiliate.

Darche didn't just pay attention to his AHL squad, the Syracuse Crunch. The ECHL matters a lot to the new GM.

While there's been no official word thta Carkner is returning to Bridgeport, he seems like a likely option at this moment in time.
