The NHL veteran and top defensive prospect traded blows in a lighthearted clash, thrilling campers with a spirited display of grit during the final day of training.

Former New York Islanders forward and current assistant to general manager Mathieu Darche. Matt Martin, was known for his physical presence on the ice during his 987-game playing career.

Over the course of 16 seasons, 14 of which were with Long Island, Martin recorded 164 fights.

His first came on Feb. 10, 2010 against Pittsburgh Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy with his last coming against Ottawa Senators forward Zack MacEwen on Jan. 14, 2025.

Well…so we thought.

On Friday, during the final day of the Matt Martin Camp, he dropped the gloves with Calder-winning defenseman and housemate Matthew Schaefer:

Fun fact: Schaefer was only 2.5 years old when Martin had his first career fight.

It was all for fun, like when later in the day Schaefer fought a camper:

The Islanders would love for Schaefer to not have to drop the gloves really ever during his NHL career but to put a smile on campers’ faces, the youngster will do just about anything.
