Despite Saturday's loss, the Islanders now have points in six straight games (3-0-3) despite falling 1-0 in a shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
ELMONT, NY – After losing defensemen Adam Pelech and Sebastian Aho 24 hours ago, the New York Islanders couldn’t solve the Philadelphia Flyers, falling 1-0 in a shootout.
The Islanders started the game strong, tallying the first six shots of the game through the opening 2:21. However, despite a power play in the mid stages of the first, New York yielded the final 12 shots of the frame.
New York had six giveaways in the frame and had the puck taken away four times by the Flyers.
The Islanders made some adjustments in the middle period, but were still outshot 12-10 in the frame. The team had another power play in the second, but again couldn’t muster a shot. The Flyers were the ones who gave the puck away six times in the second, with the Islanders cutting turnovers down to a pair.
The Islanders began the third on the power play, which once again couldn’t convert. After the Islanders killed a penalty of their own, neither team could capitalize on their opportunities, sending the game to overtime. Philadelphia once again led in shots for the period, doubling New York up 12-6.
In extra time, both teams got dangerous looks. New York got three shots in overtime to Philadelphia’s two, but none of them beat Ilya Sorokin and Sam Ersson, leading to a shootout.
The scoreless affair continued through the first four rounds of the skills contest. Bo Horvat, Oliver Wahlstrom, Mathew Barzal and Kyle Palmieri couldn’t beat Ersson. After Cam Atkinson, Sean Couturier and Morgan Frost couldn’t beat Sorokin, rookie Tyson Foerster walked it off in the bottom of the fourth, snapping the Islanders’ three game winning streak.
Despite the Flyers earning the win, both goalies get credit for shutouts. Sorokin made 40 saves in his effort, earning his second shutout of the year and third against the Flyers lifetime. Ersson’s 24 stop clean sheet is the first of his campaign and second of his career.
