The New York Islanders are going to need all the help they can get if they are going to find their way into the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

No one roots for injuries, but they happen in sports, and the Detroit Red Wings, who the Islanders trail by six points in the wild-card race, were dealt some unfortunate news today.

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin will be sidelined for two weeks due to a lower-body injury, head coach Derek Lalonde said earlier today.

The injury is a major loss for Detroit, as they are now without their leading scorer (26 goals, 28 assists) for a crucial stretch of the season.

Larkin’s loss gives New York an opportunity to further close a points gap that has already been closing over the last week,

Not even a week ago, a points lead that was once 10 now sits at six as both teams have been streaking in opposite ways.

The Islanders have won three in a row, which includes beating the Red Wings 5-3 last Thursday.

The Red Wings have dropped two in a row, leaving the points at 72 to 66 for Detroit, but the Islanders do have a game in hand.

The injury may cause Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman to boost his roster with the trade deadline looming in just four days, and he does have approximately $3 million to work with per CapFriendly.

The two teams will meet on March 21, a little over two weeks from today, so Larkin may or may not be back for a game that looks like it will have large playoff implications.
