Former Islanders Head Coach Jack Capuano Out As Senators Associate

With the Ottawa Senators beginning to construct their new coaching staff under Travis Green, former New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano will not be sticking around.

With the Ottawa Senators beginning to construct their new coaching staff under Travis Green, former New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano will not be sticking around. The Athletic's Michael Russo and The Hockey News' Steve Warne reported on Sunday that Capuano will not be back with the team next season.

Capuano spent five seasons behind the bench for the Senators, working primarily with the team's defense.

After head coach D.J. Smith was fired in December, Capuano remained with the team under interim head coach Jacques Martin.

With the Islanders, Capuano coached for seven seasons, leading New York to a 227-192-64 record. He has the second most wins for a head coach in team history, a distant second to Al Arbour's 552 victories. He was also the bench boss of the team's first playoff series win in 23 years over the Florida Panthers in 2016.

He was relieved of his duties in January 2017 before being replaced by Doug Weight.

While Capuano may be out of Ottawa, Russo shared that Capuano may be linked to the Minnesota Wild to fill an assistant coach's vacancy. Darby Hendrickson was fired on Friday, and head coach Jon Hynes has experience working with Capuano with USA Hockey.

Searches to fill the voids for both teams are underway.

Warne says Hall of Fame forward Daniel Alfredsson and Mike Yeo are among the candidates to assume Capuano's position in Ottawa.
